Cuvu College created history by securing a spot in the Powerade Super Deans Championship Under-18 grand final for the first time.

The Sigatoka-based school edged out Marist Brothers High School 12-10 to face defending champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the final.

The College which has produced top players like All Blacks winger Waisake Naholo is also an academy for the French Top 14 club Clermont.

What happened: Cuvu College started strongly as they pinned MBHS on their tryline.

Strong defence from MBHS denied Cuvu from scoring early in the game.

But continuous pressure saw Cuvu score their first try to centre Nacani Boginisoko.

MBHS settled down and began to pressure the Cuvu defence. Trailing 5-0, MBHS replied with a try to first five eight Rusiate Baleitamavua as they levelled the scores at 5-5.

Halftime: MBHS 5-5 Cuvu

A fumble by the Cuvu College centre saw MBHS scoop up the loose ball for a counter attack which Baleitamavua dived over for the second try as they led 10-5.

Their joy was short-lived when Cuvu replied in style as lock Jokini Dreunimola drove over to score with the conversion going over for a 12-10 lead.

Comments: Cuvu College principal Navneet Mishra said: “This win is for all the students and teachers of Nadroga and Navosa.

“We first played in the Deans in 2015 and we are now slowly bearing the fruits. We will need to prepare well for the final.

“Our target was to match their forward pack which we did so will need a new strategy for next week.”
