Bail denied for woman accused of harbouring escapee

A 29-year-old woman charged with one count of harbouring an escapee, was denied bail by the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday.
It is alleged that unemployed Selina Draunivesi of Waiyavi, had without lawful excuse, illegally assisted escapee, Josaia Leone on August 2, who was her de facto partner.
The incident allegedly took place inside a cave in Saru, Lautoka, where the duo was allegedly hiding. Police has confirmed that Leone is still on the run.
The accused waived her right to counsel and opted for self representation. She appeared before Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne.
State Prosecutor, Police Sergeant Theodore Lew told the Court that the accused should be refused bail on the grounds that she was of public interest.
He also added that she posed a threat to the community and that the interests of the accused wouldn’t be served if bail was granted.
Sergeant Lew said it would be dangerous to release the accused on bail since the escapee was still on the run and there were chances that they could get in touch.
The case has been adjourned to August 20, where the accused will take her plea before the Lautoka Magistrates Court.
