NO PRESSURE
The Australians have decided not to pressurise Fiji to sign the controversial Pacer Plus free trade agreement.
It’s up to Fiji when it wants to sign, it is understood.
Fiji and Papua New Guinea have refused to sign the deal because they feel it heavily favours Australia and New Zealand.
But Australia has relaxed its position as part of a major change in the way it does business in the region.
Consequently, there is a positive atmosphere as relations between the Australian High Commission and the Government improve significantly.
Thanks to John Feakes, the new high commissioner.
WHAT’S UP AT VARSITY?
The employment issue at the University of Fiji, exposed in June, has not been resolved. The Vice-Chancellor’s post is still vacant after Professor Prem Misir resigned amid drama in senior management.
Professor Narendra Reddy had acted in the position but he has gone back to Canada to get an administrative matter sorted.
