Farmer Granted Bail, Seeks Court’s Mercy

A farmer charged with act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was granted bail by the Labasa Magistrates Court, yesterday.

Stanley Anthony appeared before Resident Magistrate Qalinauci.

The alleged incident took place on August 20, 2017 at Seaqaqa.

The court heard Mr Anthony was intoxicated when he entered the victim’s house and allegedly assaulted her.

The victim was alleged to be practising witchcraft and had allegedly caused the death of his child.

Anthony’s lawyer told the court that the accused is married with five children and as a farmer he earns an annual income of $18,000.

He sought the mercy of the court and in seeking forgiveness promised not to reoffend.

He also pleaded for a non-custodial sentence.

His lawyer told the court that the accused had reconciled with the victim. The victim was not present in court to give her statement.

Anthony’s case has been adjourned to September 03, 2018.
