Giving false information lands man in court

A man charged with giving false information to a public servant and conversion appeared before the Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday.

Alick Thaggard appeared before Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci.

He pleaded not guilty and his case has been adjourned to August 31, 2018.

Thaggard is represented by a Legal Aid Commission lawyer.

For the first count it was alleged that between March 1, 2004, and December 31, 2006, at Labasa Thaggard gave Siteri Waqa, the rural advisory assistant, Northern, false information.

FICAC alleged that Thaggard applied for a Ministry of Multi Ethnic Affairs grant saying it was to build a community hall when his plan was to build a church.

It said Thaggard knew the information was false and would cause Ms Waqa to approve the application without the true state of facts.

For the second count the court heard that between March 01, 2004 and December 31, 2006, at Savusavu in the Northern Division Thaggard allegedly converted $11,000 which was for building a community hall for the Vaturova community to build a church.

FICAC said the money was entrusted to Thaggard by the Ministry of Multi Ethnic Affairs.
