Police Officer In Court On Theft Charge

A 31-year-old Police officer was remanded in custody after he appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday on a charge of theft.

On July 31, 2018, the accused Jone Kamikamica allegedly stole a Samsung J2 mobile phone valued at $299 from another Police officer, Sergeant Joseph Dickson.

On the day of the alleged incident outside the Suva Prosecution Office at about 10.30am Sergeant Dickson left his phone on top of his vehicle with his spectacles and went to get the dispatch from his office.

When he returned he discovered his phone missing.

Sergeant Dickson searched for his phone and when he could not find it he reported the matter.

During the course of investigation reports from Vodafone and informers revealed that the accused was in possession of the phone at his home.

A search warrant was executed and the phone was recovered from the accused’s wife, who said that the accused had gifted the phone to her after telling her that he had bought it from Homemaker.

The accused was refused bail by Magistrate Deepika Prakash after he failed to produce a suitable surety.

He was represented by the Legal Aid Commission, whose representative requested for the case to be called again today for the accused’s surety to appear in court.
