Three men convicted of  terrorising and robbing a Canadian couple before one of them raped the woman have been told that their offence dealt a severe blow to the Fijian economy.

This was because, they were told, the Fijian economy depended in part on the hospitality industry.

Appearing in the High Court before Justice Aruna Aluthge were Pita Natekuru, 24, Laitia Nalawa, 34, and Jale Fatiaki, 35.

They were charged with a count of aggravated robbery each, while Natekuru faced an additional charge of rape.

Justice Aluthge called it an atrocious crime.

Natekuru was sentenced to 15 years in jail with a non-parole period of 12 years.

Nalawa was sentenced to nine years and six months behind bars with a non-parole period of eight years.

Fatiaki copped a nine-year jail term with a non-parole period of seven years.

The court heard that on March 10, 2014, Natekuru, Nalawa and Fatiaki robbed the couple holidaying at Star Fish Villa in Volivoli, Rakiraki.

On the night of the robbery, the couple was watching television in their villa when the accused forced open a window and entered the villa armed with offensive weapons.

They frightened and threatened the tourists took their belongings valued at $6269.

In the process, Natekuru threatened the female victim and dragged her to the bathroom before raping her.

While sentencing the three men Justice Aluthge said the physical and emotional suffering of the victims would affect them for the rest of their lives.

The aggravating factors were that the offence was committed in a night time home invasion and it was a premeditated attack.

“The offenders must be punished to denounce and to send a clear message to the community that no such actions will be tolerated by our society and courts,” Justice Aluthge said.
