Between The Lines

Churches caught in row
Some Christian churches in an area in Vanua Levu are tangled in a messy dispute.
The church that has been in this village the longest wants to organise a monthly combined church service for all the religions. The village elders who are members of the church are alleged to have said that the monthly service is part of the village by-law.
But the other churches are arguing that it contravenes the Constitutional provision of freedom of religion and worship under our secular state. No person can compel another person on matters of religion.
This could be a human rights case for Ashwin Raj.
Land row unresolved
A group of disgruntled iTaukei landowners is calling on higher authorities for intervention after it has reached a seemingly dead end in a land dispute.
The landowners want to know how 126 acres of their mataqali or communally-owned land was reserved and now leased to one organisation.
Efforts to get the mataqali to meet and discuss the issue have failed. The landowners want to see the document which supposedly has signatures of the members of the mataqali. They want to know who signed the document.
Taxi watch
Something must be done to rein in some of these taxi drivers who appear to be adopting a no-care attitude.
On Thursday night one taxi driver tried to do a u-turn in Raiwaqa, Suva. In the process the taxi collided with a private car and held up traffic.
If you see a taxi driving dangerously please call Police or LTA.
