The Indian Embassy is inviting members of the public to take advantage of its one-day free health screening next Wednesday (August 15).

The screening programme coincides with the arrival of the Indian Navy ship INS Sahyadri, a stealth multi-role frigate, next Monday on a goodwill visit.

The arrival of the ship aims to strengthen the close bilateral relations between India and Fiji and coincides with India’s Independence Day on August 15.

India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Vishvas Sapkal, said a series of programmes had been organised for the visit.

“Officers from INS Sahyadri, RFMF and Indian High Commission will participate in mangrove and sandalwood planting on August 14 at Tamavua,” he said.

“The ship will also be celebrating the 72nd India Independence Day in Fiji.

“On August 15, doctors on board the INS Sahyadri and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) doctors will be at Ratu Sukuna Park from 10am to 4.30pm for free health screening.”

Mr Sapkal said public tours of the ship had also been organised for August 14 and some schools had shown interest.

“Schools have come forward and they will be taken in the ship by a tour guide. The public are invited, but people should bring their identification card (ID) with them. The visit will be from 10am to 4pm,” Mr Sapkal said.

More than five schools and approximately more than 200 students are expected to be given a tour of the INS Sahyadri.

Indian Naval Defence Adviser Captain (Navy) Manish Rai said the INS Sahyadri had been at sea for the past three months.

“The men are looking forward to come to Fiji. From here they will continue their journey to Australia,” he said.
