Ryan Vijay Chand is the first in his family to play for Cakaudrove in the Vodafone Kaji Rugby competition at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

Chand who is shy by nature hails from Naqera outside Savusavu.

The 14-year-old told SUNsports yesterday that he always watched the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team play on television and it was last year that he decided to take up the sport.

Like any Fijian boy, Chand says, one day he hopes to represent Fiji in either sevens or fifteens rugby.

“This is my second year playing in the kaji comeptition and I enjoy every moment of it.

“Watching the national rugby team on TV and having to play the sport are two different things altogether.

“I want to become the next Amenoni Nasilasila and I’m determined to do it.”

His father, Anand Chand said he is proud of his son.

“I never imagined my son playing rugby, since I always played football, but I’m proud of the choices he has made.”

Chand is a Year 8 student of Khamendra Central Primary School.

The competition continues today with the finals set for Wednesday.
