Ba rep Simione Nabenu and Iliesa Gata scored in the second spell to land Xavier College their first ever Vodafone Fijian Secondary Schools Football Championship Under-19 title at Prince Charles Park, Nadi yesterday.

The Ba-based school defeated Ahmadiya Muslim College of Dreketi, Vanua Levu 2-0 in the final.

XC captain Shaneel Narayan said, “We thank the Almighty for giving us the strength and power to perform. We are all really happy for this win and we want to dedicate this win to all the people in Ba. We started training in Term Two. We went through hard sessions and as we were in camp for three weeks and it paid off.”

The side had the services of former Fijian U17 reps Muza Jamil, Jone Sukulu, Simone Nabenu and Shaneel Narayan.

AMC captain Marika Vaniqi said, “It was a good journey although we fell short but hats off to the boys and hope we can do better next year.”

XC received $1200 while AMC got $600 for their effort.

In the first semifinal, XC defeated Bhawani Dayal Arya College 4-1 while Ahmadiya Muslim College edged Nadi Muslim College 1-0.

The Viniana Buke-captained Vunimono High School football team of Nausori won the open girls title for the first time yesterday.

The teams were locked 1-1 at fulltime before the Nausori-based school defeated Xavier College (Ba) 4-3 on penalty kicks.

The goals were scored by Delasiana Drolagi, Mere Ciri and Vani Bainivalu.

Coach Elvis Goundar attributed the win to the sacrifice and dedication of the players.

“This is a proud moment for us and for our school for winning this year’s girls title.

“The girls started playing football last year and we are over the moon with the win.”

 

Finals results:

U15: Xavier College 4-3 Labasa College; U17: Tavua College 3-1 Labasa Muslim College;

Open Girls: Vunimono High 4-3 Xavier College;

U19 final: Xavier College 2- 0 Ahmadiya Muslim College .
