Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) Under-16 hockey team of Nadi came into the Tuckers Fiji Secondary Schools Hockey tournament without a coach.

Despite the setback, they walked away winners at the National Hockey Centre after defeating St John’s College Cawaci 1-0 yesterday.

SSKMC teacher Poonam Ram said the team was guided by teachers of the school and Ernest Coffin who helped the team during training.

“After two years the title has returned to our school,” Ram said.

“I should applaud the girls for their discipline and putting their whole interest in the sport though they play without a coach.

“Coming into the competition undefeated we knew that it was not going to be easy.

“We are happy with the win and all the thanks go to the teachers and Coffin for guiding the team through the district competition, playoff and the finals.”

Meanwhile in the boys, Marist Brother High School and St John’s College Cawaci drew 0 -0l-all at fulltime. MBHS won 2-0 after penalty shootout.

Semifinal results:

Girls: LPS1-4 SJC, SJSS 0-2 SSKMC

Boys: MBHS 2-1 THS, LPS 0-2 SJC
