The construction of a new Fiji National University (FNU) teaching facility at the Fiji Maritime Academy in Nasese is set to begin eventually after a contract was signed yesterday with Sambhu Lal Construction Fiji Ltd.

FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Nigel Healey said the number of students was increasing significantly, which was why the new construction is set to accommodate about 500 to 600 students.

“We will use this new facility to house a Marine High Voltage Room, Safety and Survival Equipment Labs, Computers Lab, a Fisheries Lab and a number of lecture rooms designed for classes of about 40 students,” he said.

He further added that they were soon going to have WIFI in all their campus.

“So in 2019, we are planning to launch a new Bachelor’s programme, which will build on the Diploma programmes and give graduated a diploma in Nautical science”, he said.

Professor Healey said they are grateful for getting the support from Government.

“Our operating ground for this year is $65 million,” he said.

“Capital allocation this year is $20 million, which is more from last year’s allocation,” he said.
