The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma was able to collect more than $500,000 during last week’s Festival of Praise at Suva’s Furnival Park.

This was confirmed by Methodist Church President Reverend Epineri Vakadewavosa on Tuesday.

“Before we started this year we have already collected almost $1.5 million. What was collected last Saturday was just a top up of what we have already collected,” Reverend Vakadewavosa said.

“We were able to collect more than half a million dollars last week and the money collected will be used for the operations of the church.”

Reverend Vakadewavosa said smoking and drinking was also a factor in the decline of membership.

“That is one of the issues in the church and we respect the liberty of everybody, but we preach more of Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth and the light. He is the totality of life,” he said.

“At the same time we are encouraging our members to get their lives shipshape. Smoking is not part of the Christian life and that is what we are trying to address as well.”
