This is the first time Maraia Waca is feeding the chickens at the Narikoso Poultry Farm in Narikoso Village on Ono Island in Kadavu.

She gave birth three months ago and she was allowed to take a rest before she resumed her chores in the village.

“I am getting a hang of this job of feeding chickens, although I was nervous about feeding them, I think I will get used to it.”

The farm is operated by the Narikoso Women’s Club. It was funded by GIZ in 2015, and since then the club has made close to $19,000.

GIZ is a German development agency headquartered in Bonn and Eschborn that provides services in the field of international development co-operation.

Club member Josephine Naitini said: “The money that is collected from selling eggs will be used to buy new cages for the meat birds.”

Right now close to 90 layer birds are sustained in the cages at the poultry farm.

“We take turns to feed the chickens every week. If a woman is unable to tend to the poultry farm, then someone from her family will come and feed the chickens in the morning and afternoon,” Ms Naitini said.

The project began as a means of food security for the villagers.

“It has provided us with knowledge on account keeping and taking log book records. We fill in our log books every morning and evening and we even include the weather.

“This is to keep track of the behaviour of the chickens.”

Meanwhile a shop keeper, Semesa Matanawa’s business has benefitted from the setting up of the farm.

He buys fresh eggs from the Narikoso Poultry Farm. Before this he used to order eggs from Ram Sami. Not only has this project provided food security for the villagers, but it has also equipped the women of Narikoso with the proper management of money.
