Gabe Mastromatteo won Canada’s first gold medal during the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific competition at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre, Suva last night.

The 16-year- old won the men’s 100metre breastroke in 1minute 1.27 secs, United States of America’s Daniel Roy settled for silver in 1:1. 85 sec and Japan’s Yamato Fukusawa won bronze in 1: 2.06 secs.

Mastromatteo said it was nice to win and there is still a lot of areas that he still need to improve on.

“I knew coming into this international meet that I needed to have the best race that I possible could,” Mastromatteo said.

“The plan is to progress to the top and keep moving forward while enjoying the sport.”

Mastromatteo added from the past two days of competition he has learnt that anything can happen.

“Coming into this competition, I was not feeling well but it was nice to come away with the win. It took some work but we got the win after a long travel.”
