The newly-crowned Mr Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North, Vishal Prasad has promised to take up a garden project for the only senior citizens’ home in the North.

The 24-year-old dietician, originally from Nausori and working at the Ro Qomate Health Centre in Labasa, also won the Mr Personality award.

During the crowning at Subrail Park on Thursday night the Pioneer Security Services-sponsored contestant invited other three kings and 12 queen contestants to join him and make a vegetable garden on September 1.

“When I came to Labasa as a practical student in 2015 there was a vegetable garden at the home which was then known as Babasiga Ashram,” Mr Prasad said.

“The number of workers has reduced and no one is there to work o the gardens.”

The only child in his family, he was advocating on the topic breastfeeding, the foundation of life.

Mr Prasad said he wanted to help the home to have its food security and be sustainable on its own.

“The idea to make a vegetable garden came to mind when I visited the home with other contestants during the tour this week,” he said.

“I shocked to win the crown because I saw the other three contestants were equally good.”

His emotional mother, Satya Wati said.

“Since he started work in Labasa he had been renting out and doing things on his own with a free spirit.

“When he told me his decision to participate in the weeklong festival I was worried about how he would manage, but I blessed him by leaving everything in God’s hand.

“I would like to thank all those who helped him achieve his dream.”

Meanwhile, Mr Legend Distributors Limited Samuel Koi was named the King runner-up.
