The vision to further strengthen Fiji’s position as a modern transportation and transhipment hub is set out in the five-year and 20-year National Development Plan.

These were the words of the Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism Shaheen Ali while officiating the 25th anniversary of United Containers Fiji Ltd (UCFL).

Mr Ali highlighted the container companies play an important role that is often seen in the background and not noticed by ordinary people.

“They play the role of logistics which is very critical in the global arena,” Mr Ali said.

“With services like freight storage, container hygiene, repair of containers, goods and services we are exporting are important to the regional and local markets.

“A vital role to deliver this kind of service at an international standard and practises.”

He also applauded UCFL for their work in Fiji and encouraged them to continue to grow their operations.

“Over the years, UCFL has evolved from an agency that provided container storage services to today providing a whole range of services, which includes container hygiene services,” Mr Ali said.

He said it is encouraging to note that Fijian industries were diversifying into new areas, such as container depot and have capitalised on the forward-looking and pro-growth policies of the Fijian Government.

He said the success story not only shows the ability of Fiji to provide services to international shipping lines but also depicts an effective collaboration between Fijian and international business.

“It is simply a perfect example of how Fijian businesses can stamp its mark in the international arena.”

UCFL provides services such as cleaning, repairing, pre-shipment inspections.

He said the provision of container depot service is an important component of the supply chain as it plays an important role in facilitating trade.

He urged the providers of depot and container hygiene services to comply with industry best practices and standards.

“Companies like UCFL are putting Fiji’s trade on the map. This would ensure our trade is healthy and contributes to our foreign reserves in the economy.”

Competition.

Mr Ali said they are open to investment, both foreign and local.

He said Government has provided the right policy framework.

“The Government has heavily invested in public infrastructure like roads, ports and bridges that are vital for logistics,” Mr Ali said.

“While company’s like UCFL connect the dots, we ensure that the dots are connected by having the right infrastructure and policy environment.

“With these policies comes confidence, as our economy has been growing for the past nine years consecutively.”

Chairman of UCFL Stuart Ferguson said their business like all others is dependent on its client base.

He said it is their satisfaction with their performance and willingness that helps them stay ahead of the needs of the industry they serve.

Mr Ferguson said with a steady, reliable, skilled and dedicated people have combined to make company where it is today.

Investment

Mr Ferguson said they continue to invest in containers to lease and sell.

He said they have a continuing difficulty keeping pace with the demand for second-hand containers.

“We want to devote more time and effort to control the inflow of equipment so that the outflow is less than what we have coming in,” Mr Ferguson said.
