Malamala Beach Club Fiji, dubbed as the world’s first beach club island, reached a milestone as it celebrated its one-year anniversary.

The landowning unit and its business arm, Naobekwa Investment Limited (NIL), have praised the South Sea Cruises management and the Fijian Government for a successful partnership deal to date.

The club played host to guests and selected tourism executives of various organisations on Friday night.

Naobekwa Investment Limited secretary Joeli Vatunitu said: “One year was really fast, and it was unbelievable, things are still coming into terms with reality which was then on the paper.

“It has caught us by surprise, it is a relationship and we are working well.

Mr Vatunitu also acknowledged those who were part of the negotiations in the initial stages of negotiation but are no longer in the business arm of Malamala Beach Club Fiji.

“They themselves know who they were but I want to make a special mention of Peter Duncan, he is the real man who believed in us and thus brought us this far,” Mr Vatunitu said.

“Also the Government of the day thank you so much for helping us in this journey.”

Tourism Fiji chief executive Matthew Stoeckel said: “Congratulations to the great team at Malamala Beach Club Fiji for all they have achieved over the last 12 months in launching the world’s first island beach club.

“We continue to receive outstanding feedback from visitors about the experience and its new products such as this that help attracts more people to visit Fiji and ensure we remain internationally competitive.

“Congratulations and wishing them many more successful years to come,” he added.

South Sea Cruises Director of Sales and Marketing Wayne Deed said: “It has been really exciting to be here 12 months down the track.

“The team have done a fantastic job over the last 12 months and building up the presence of the club to our local domestic market in Fiji.”

Mr Deed was overall happy with the numbers coming out to the beach club every day.

“There is a big focus on conference and incentive group and also the wedding market as well. We feel this is an ideal venue for weddings. There are the deck and other areas that can be hired for private events,” Mr Deed said.

South Sea Island

The owners are investing in the South Sea Island with the building of three little private bures with double beds and outdoor shower to compliment the current structures including the dormitory.

“This project is due to complete in a couple of weeks,” Mr Deed said.

“Certainly there was a big demand for accommodation closer to Denarau on an off-shore island plus we are building it for our Awesome Adventures Fiji clients that are coming and do itineraries in the Yasawas and often have their last night at the South Sea Island.

“For a couple it’s ideal to spend their last night before they head to the airport to go home.

“We will be marketing those out to our trade partners and the domestic market as well. The investment is pretty competitive,” Mr Deed said.

Blue Lagoon Cruises

Blue Lagoon Cruises is also undergoing a soft brand refreshing with the initial logo colour changing.

“We have done a soft brand refresh on Blue Lagoon, a change (logo) from the gold colour into blue which is of modern colouring as we refresh the brand on board,” Mr Deed said.

“All our menus and some soft items on board has changed but not to the exterior of the vessels as yet. Changing those assets is just to give a more modern look.”
