For nearly two weeks, Luisa Hina watched her daughter on life support at Lautoka Hospital as she fought for her life.

Her daughter, eight-year-old Ulamila Finau, died last Saturday from severe head injuries sustained in a road accident.

Ms Hina described the last days with her only daughter as “heartbreaking”.

Ulamila was hit by a vehicle on August 12, just few metres from her home at Vatukarasa Village, Nadroga.

The student of Sigatoka Methodist Primary School was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Hospital, where she died.

Ms Hina said her daughter was on life support when she was transferred from Sigatoka Hospital after the incident.

“My husband and I were by her side until the day she passed away. It is the most heartbreaking thing ever to lose a child, she was the most precious thing I ever had,” the tearful 30-year-old said.

Mr Hina described her only daughter as a smart and energetic person.

“She was a school prefect and a very smart girl. I remember one day she told us that she wanted to join the military in the future.

“Finau was loved by everyone in our family and church, she used to welcome anyone that visited our home,” she added.

Ms Hina said that as a mother it was painful for her to spend the last days with her daughter in such a situation.

“To see her fighting for her life while on life support is just painful,” she added.

Police media liaison officer Ana Naisoro said Ulamila was hit by an oncoming vehicle while walking with an 18-year-old cousin. She added the 60-year-old driver would be questioned once the post-mortem examination was completed.

“The road death toll currently stands at 47 compared to 44 for the same period last year,” Ms Naisoro said.
