The Pakistani community in Fiji yesterday celebrated the country’s 71st independence day.

More than 50 community members gathered at the residence of ANZ Fiji Country Head Saud Minam in Suva.

Pakistan gained independence from the British Empire on August 14, 1947.

The country was born after partition from what was then known as British India.

The main Independence Day ceremony takes place in Islamabad, where the national flag is hoisted at the Presidential and Parliament buildings.

It is followed by the national anthem and live televised speeches by leaders.

Mr Minam said unity was what kept us tied together.

“We have a very small community of Pakistanis in Fiji,” he said.

“We also look at how we can support our country while we are here.

“In our flag, the colour white reflects the minority peace and it is important for us to know that how inclusive the country has been since 1947, from the day of independence.

“Pakistanis are also known as the most innovative people and we have continued to grow in all parts of the world,” Mr Minam said.  Edited by Epineri Vula.
