Between The Lines

October poll?
President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote’s first three-year term expires first half of October.
Parliament cannot sit then because we could be going to the polls around then.
So that’s why Parliament will hold a special sitting tomorrow to address the issue. Because he has done an excellent job during his first three-year term, BTL thinks he deserves to get another term.
Temple affair
Rajni Chand, who happens to be wife of NFP leader Biman Prasad, was annoyed she was not allowed into a temple when the Attorney-General was permitted to go in. Seems like there is more to it. Maybe because the likes of Attar Singh and Riddhi Damodar sat at the sidelines without any attention paid to them. That could be the main issue here.
Fundraiser sequel
Tickets to a SODELPA fundraising dinner are being returned to the organisers because some members are struggling to sell them. MPs have been issued 20 tickets each to sell. A ticket costs $150. It still has not been clarified whether the funds collected will be used for the 2018 general campaign or to pay for party leader Sitiveni Rabuka’s legal bills in a court case. The party levies $6000 for each provisional candidate and whether they win a seat or not, the money pays for election costs. The long campaign is taking its toll on the pockets of many.
Wrong place
A woman stood her ground and corrected the misinformation when she joined the after-the-church service function of a Christian denomination. As soon as everyone settled down the spiritual talk turned to politics. Anti-government sentiments were expressed and the issue of land, leased and freehold was discussed by the men. She could not tolerate it any more because she knew the truth. She was familiar with the issue because she worked in the office where the land deals were formalized and signed. She spoke with strong conviction that she silenced the men. She deserves a reward for her courage.
