The former Commissioner of Police Andrew Charles Hughes died at the age of 62 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia on Tuesday.

The Australian national was the Commissioner of Police in 2003 to 2006.

Radio NZ reported that the late Mr Hughes died in Cairns on Tuesday after suffering from bowel cancer.

He was a high-ranking officer with the Australian Federal Police when he was seconded to Fiji in 2003.

He later worked at the United Nations in New York as Police adviser for peacekeeping operations.

In 2007, the late Mr Hughes was awarded the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service in the international arena.

The late Mr Hughes was an Australian citizen born on June 6, 1956. He was married with two children.

He served the Australian Federal Police as a senior police officer and as the Chief Police Officer of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) before being appointed the Commissioner of the Police in Fiji after the events of 2000.

The late Mr Hughes had established the Fiji Police Women’s Network in 2004.
