OHS Probe Death Of Chinese National

The Chinese national who died while working at the Vodafone Arena in Suva had only been in Fiji less than three days when he fell to his death.

This was revealed by Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Jone Usamate yesterday.

He said investigations had been carried out by the Occupational Health and Safety Department.

The 51-year-old construction worker died at around midday on Sunday August 19, 2018 when he fell from a high place where he was painting.

“Our Occupational Health and Safety Department have seen some practices there that are not in accordance with the law, so they put up some notices and they have taken action on the occupational health and safety,” Mr Usamate said.

He added that he had yet to be updated on any payment that may be done under the workmen’s compensation scheme because their team was still looking at the legal requirements of the process.

The worker died on the spot after his fall and a post mortem examination was expected to be conducted.

In a statement by the Chinese Embassy reported that it had demanded the company concerned properly handle the aftermath of the incident.
