To provide the coherent Transportation Network that Fiji needs, the Fiji Roads Authority has to overcome many challenges.

This was echoed by FRA chief executive officer, Jonathan Moore at the Fiji Chamber of Commerce Business Forum yesterday.

Mr Moore highlighted that FRA having an outdated network was a challenge which causes an increasing number of road users.

He said the management and control of vehicle numbers using Fiji roads was not the responsibility of the FRA but to account for the increase they had some plans in line.

Plans

The plan includes:

Increasing capacity wherever possible and needed by adding road lanesProvide more facilities for faster vehicles to pass slower vehicles on major highways

Provide efficient traffic flow through Urban areas

And support the growth of public transport by proving part time or dedicated bus lanes with Park-and-ride access.

Mr Moore added that they are also facing legacy issues around historic underfunding and ineffective forward planning and also virtually zero network resilience.

“Network Resilience is a major consideration in the support of an effective economy,” he said.
