Coming off the back of a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Macau less than a week ago, the Solomon Islands proved they are a better side at the ANZ Stadium last night.

They led 1-0 at halftime and held on to secure a 1-1 draw against the Vodafone Fijian football team.

And in doing so justified their 143rd ranking in the world against the Christophe Gamel-coached side  currently ranked 165th .

Wellington Phoenix striker and team captain Roy Krishna saved the day for Fiji scoring from a penalty in the 59th minute

Despite the input of Krishna and England-based Stoke City player Scott Wara, the Fijians struggled to find form.

Solomon Islands player Micah Lea’alafa, who played for Auckland City FC,  was the go to man for visitors.

In the 20th minute, he outplayed the Fijian defenders to score the first goal.

Halftime: Solomon Island 1 – Fiji 0.

In the second spell, Fiji failed to capitalised on scoring chances.

Fulltime: Solomon Island 1 – 1Fiji.

Comments:

Solomon coach Moses Toata said:

“It was an exciting game and even though we dominated in the first half, we could have scored some more goals. I am very happy how the boys played to plan.”

Fijian coach Christophe Gamel said:

“I am happy with the players’ performance and after this we will have to focus for Singapore.”

Singapore is 169th in the world.

Since taking the helm of the Bula Boys Gamel has recorded a win and three draws against Solomon Islands, including the nil-all draw during the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu last December.
