23-year-old man charged with two separate counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and failure to comply with requirements after an accident was granted bail by the Sigatoka Magistrates Court yesterday.

It is alleged that on September 2 Sanjil Sharma was driving a car under the influence of liquor with three other passengers when he lost control, causing the car to tumble down a hill in Sigatoka Valley.

The incident claimed the life of a 24-year-old man, about 22km from Sigatoka.

Sharma appeared before Magistrate Jeremiah Savou.

State prosecutor Police Sergeant Elina Cerei objected to bail on the grounds that the case was of public interest.

“So far a total of 49 people have died on our roads and this is a liquor associated accident. The accused was the under the influence of liquor when he was driving,” she said.

“The accused ran away from the scene while the deceased was still stuck in the car. This is a deadly combination.

“The prosecution has a strong case and the accused did not co-operate with Police after the accident.”

Sergeant Cerei said before the accident the accused was warned by the Lands Transport Authority because of his driving attitude.

Defence lawyer Babu Singh said his client was very remorseful after the incident happened.

“We are in a position to put risk conditions for him. There is no flight risk and he will stay with his parents. I ask the court that he be granted bail for his liberty rather than locking him up,” he added.

The case was adjourned to February 12 next year where the accused is expected to take his plea.
