A 60-year-old man was sentenced to eight months imprisonment by the Suva Magistrates Court for act with intent to cause grievous harm.

Ilaitia Qalo appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara yesterday.

He was told to serve three months while five months of his sentence was suspended for four years.

On January 27, 2018 between 3am and 4am along Edinburgh Drive in Suva, the accused hit the complainant on his head using a spade.

The complainant was Qalo’s supervisor.

The complainant had asked Qalo to increase the pace of his work because they wanted to finish off with their work.

When the complainant bent down to check the level of the asphalt, in the process of it, Qalo hit the complainant’s head with a spade.

The complainant then ran away from where he was and saw Qalo still holding the spade in his hand.

The complainant then reported the matter to the Samabula Police Station.

The complainant was medically examined where the findings revealed he had suffered injuries.

Magistrate Wickramasekara said the reason for Qalo to serve three months of the sentence was because of the sharp weapon used and the seriousness of the assault.
