Bail hearing for alleged 45-year-old rapist confirmed

A man charged with the alleged rape of his biological mother and grandniece has been further remanded by the Suva High Court.

The accused appeared on Friday before Justice Daniel Goundar.

The 45-year-old man is charged with two counts of rape of his 63-year-old biological mother between January 2016, and August 2017, in Kadavu.

In another matter, the accused was charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault of his nine-year-old grandniece between January 2017 and June 2018, in Kadavu. State counsel, Swastika Sharma, informed the defence counsel that they were objecting to bail on the grounds of relations between the accused and the complainants. She also stated that the accused wanted to go back to Kadavu to look after his mother who is a complainant but there was a high risk of interference between the accused and the complainants.

Ms Sharma informed the court that they would be calling two witnesses in the first matter and relying on the medical reports of the complainants and the admissions made in the caution interview. Justice Goundar adjourned the matter for bail hearing on September 21.
