What started as a joyous wedding ceremony turned tragic after a man died in a fire that destroyed a home and makeshift shed for the occasion.

Dead is Surendra Singh who has been dubbed a hero by family members who said he put the family’s lives first ahead of his.

The incident has left the community of Velovelo in Lautoka in shock.

Ranjita Singh, owner of the home and whose daughter was to be married yesterday said: “My kaka (uncle) had been sleeping in the sitting room and was the first to be awoken so he started alerting people of the fire.”

She said they tried to put out the fire, but it spread quickly.

“We started running for our lives. My uncle started to get everybody out of the house immediately,” she said.

As they got to safety they called the National Fire Authority.

“The fire did not show its mercy on my uncle and he died trying to save the family. He did not think of his life. He put others life before him,” she said.

Thirteen family members were inside the house at the time of the fire.

Pritam Singh, a cousin of the deceased said: “We were really happy when we last met.”

He described his cousin as one who lived happily and always loved to socialize.

“I’m still unable to come to terms with his loss. He died a hero,” he said.

Of the wedding, Ms Singh said she has lost everything, she had to make her daughter’s wedding the best.

“It was such a happy moment for me and now I cannot even describe what I feel anymore. I’m so broken,” Ms Singh said.

It was to be the wedding day for her eldest daughter, Sindhiya Singh, 25.

“This was the first wedding in our house and I could never even think that something like this would happen,” she said.

Mrs Singh said that everyone had been excited about the wedding but now it had ended in tragedy.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a man believed to be in his 50’s died in a house fire early at around 3am yesterday.

She said that the victim was staying at his nephew’s house which was destroyed by the fire.
