Trial begins for man who allegedly raped daughters

The trial for a man who allegedly raped his daughter in the 1980s and then her daughter, who is also his biological daughter, will begin on Monday.

Justice Daniel Goundar had looked into the accused’s medical report from November, 2017, which stated that he was fit to go through the trial.

It was heard that the accused was partially paralysed hence he was wheelchair-bound.

After speaking with the accused Justice Goundar ruled for the trial to begin.

The 74-year-old who is wheelchair-bound agreed to the trial.

His case was called before Justice Goundar who has transferred the matter before another judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe for the trial.

It is alleged that the man from Rakiraki raped his daughter when she was under 13 years of age and later raped the offspring of the same daughter, when she too was a teenager.

The complainants are his biological daughters.

The state counsel, Lavenia Bogitini, informed the court that they will call in two Police officers as witnesses on voir dire grounds.

She also stated that there were full admissions in the caution interview which the state will rely on.

The accused is currently on bail.
