Ba Qualify, Tavua Stay On

The Ba football side are in celebration mode as they have qualified for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Champions League.  Ba beat Labasa 1-0 in their Vodafone Premier League clash at the Fiji FA academy ground, Ba yesterday.

The win saw Ba secure second spot in the VPL and will accompany Lautoka to the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Dreketi have been demoted to the senior division after they went down 1-0 to Tavua in their decider clash at Garvey Park.

Tavua took the lead in the 19th minute through a Moshin Khan strike and they never looked back.

What happened:  Both teams started strongly trying to get the early advantage.

Ba had the services of Saula Waqa, Manasa Nawaikula, Avinesh Swamy, Malakai Tiwa and Kishan Sami as they time and again had Labasa in trouble but could not score.

Halftime: Ba 0 –0 Labasa

The hosts maintained the pressure and in the 70th minute Labasa defender Jale Dreloa got a red card for dangerously elbowing Ba striker Saula Waqa.

With only 10-men, Labasa defended desperately as Ba came close to scoring. Ba’s chance came in the 88th minute when Meli Codro was fouled in the penalty box and Mana Nawaikula made no mistake from the spot kick.

Big play: Labasa goalkeeper Akuila Mateisuva who made a number of good saves and he was directing his defenders all the time as Ba found it hard to score.

Comments: Ba manager Arvind Singh said: “It was tough game and we are happy to win in the end.

Labasa coach Johan Leewai said: “Our boys played really well but we are unhappy with the referee’s decision in awarding Ba a last minute penalty.”
