Nippy Vodafone Fijian Under-16 football midfielder Eshan Kumar was the toast of the side when they beat New Caledonia 1-0 at the Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara, Solomon Islands yesterday.

The win saw the Yogendra Dutt-coached side qualify to the OFC U16 semi-final against hosts Solomon Islands on Wednesday followed by Tahiti taking on New Zealand in the second semi-final.

Dutt said they went into the game knowing what to expect from New Caledonia since they had played Tahiti earlier.

The young Fijians took control of the situation in the 45th minute when a cross from Jone Turagalailai on the left flank was tapped away by a New Caledonian defender and lurking on the right-hand side was Kumar who blasted the ball to the roof of the net.

Leading 1-0 at halftime the Fijian U16 side opted to defend the lead as the heat took its toll on both teams.

New Caledonia came back trying hard to score the equaliser but goalkeeper Isikeli Sevanaia Jnr made some brilliant saves to the delight of the Fiji fans.
