The 30-year-old driver alleged to have caused the death of a 26-year-old woman in Valelevu on Sunday has been further remanded in custody.
Viliame Raibulu Ratoto is charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and one count each of breach of zero alcohol limit and manslaughter.
It is alleged that on September 16, 2018, Ratoto drove a vehicle with registration EVENTS along Kanace Road in Valelevu whilst 156.2 milligrams of alcohol was present in 100 millilitres of his blood which was in excess of the prescribed limit.
Ratoto is also alleged to have driven in a manner which was reckless and caused serious harm to Archana Amrita Chand, 26, which resulted in her death.
On that same day he also allegedly caused bodily injuries to Anjula Chand, 35, and Privasinal Chand, 33.
Police Prosecutor Special Constable Gajendra Prasad objected to Ratoto’s bail and made an application for the case to be transferred to the Suva High Court because he was charged with manslaughter which is an indictable offence.
The accused has since been remanded in custody and the case has been adjourned to September 28, 2018 for mention.
Ratoto appeared before Nasinu Magistrate Charles Ratakele and was represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer Shavleen Prasad.
