The former Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor turned politician the late Ratu Jone Kubuabola, will be remembered as someone who was always ready to put the national interest before his own.

These were the words of another former RBF governor turned politician Savenaca Narube.

“He was an enthusiastic man. While working under him, he gave us opportunities to show what we could do, and he would always be there to guide us,” said the leader of Unity Fiji who delivered his former colleague’s eulogy at the Centenary Methodist Church yesterday.

Following his retirement from RBF after being the Development Economist and Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) for 12 years, Ratu Jone joined politics.

He was the Minister of Finance and National Planning from 2000 to 2006 under the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL).

Ratu Jone was said to be actively involved in the formation of SODELPA in 2013.

Mr Narube said: “He was someone who empowered his employees. He was someone who never imposed his authority.

“He never looked down on others. He was always ready to listen and spoke very little.”

Also delivering his eulogy was former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.

“I have known Ratu Jone since 1965 when we had to share accommodation in Auckland, New Zealand,” Mr Qarase said.

“I have seen and learned a lot from this man. So did all those who knew him.

“He was a man of intelligence and brilliance. He was a man who had patience.

“We are here to remember someone who has done his part for Fiji. He led an exemplary life,” he said.

“God gave us a man that dedicated his life to our country.”

The late Ratu Jone was laid to rest at the Suva Extension Cemetery yesterday.
