Government has invested $7.1million to develop Nabouwalu into a town.

Successful contractor Hussain’s Hire Plant of Labasa will carry out the project in the next 12 months.

During the signing of the contract yesterday, Minister for Local Government, Housing, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala said the development of the new town was another milestone for Fiji.

He said it was something outside of the norm where towns and cities had grown without proper planning and design.

Mr Bala said Nabouwalu will be a municipality in the not too distant future, having its own facilities, and prepared for its people with the inclusion of a well-serviced centre for trade offering lots of opportunities.

“Getting Nabouwalu off the ground is not an easy task, let alone making of a town, a place where we can all say ‘our new town,” Mr Bala said.

“It is important, that we get the designs, the plans right, engineering designs and even environment requirements met before the work starts.”

He acknowledged experts who had been part of the process adding that getting the right people to carry out works is equally important.

“Nabouwalu new town will provide the benchmark for other new towns to come; it will be the model of new planned resilient urban centres or towns; a town that will be able to sustain itself or grow sustainably,” he said.

The development of Nabouwalu Town is Government’s investment in the Province of Bua in Vanua Levu and will see a small trading jetty with supporting facilities developed to be a township.
