Accused Advised To Rethink Plea

A n accused was given another chance by the High Court to rethink his plea to an arson charge because it was an indictable offence.

Waisea Gonevou, charged with one count of arson, appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar on Thursday. It is alleged that on December 26, 2016, Gonevou set fire to a house in Tamavua Village, Suva.

Gonevou had maintained his guilty plea in court, saying that he had pleaded guilty on his own free will.

Justice Goundar told the court that arson was a serious charge to plead guilty to.

He told Gonevou to speak with his lawyer first before his plea was retaken.

Justice Goundar explained in court that if the accused still maintained his guilty plea after consulting his lawyer, then both lawyers (prosecution and defence) are to prepare for Gonevou’s sentencing submissions.

The case was adjourned to October 18, for sentencing submission and retake of plea. Gonevou’s bail was extended. Edited by Caroline Ratucadra
