Fresh UniFiji Abuse Of Office Probe

An alleged new abuse of office case at the University of Fiji has been lodged with the Fiji Independent Corruption Against Commission (FICAC).

It will be on the agenda when the UniFiji Council meets the Fiji Education Commission at Lautoka.

It is understood that the case is linked to recent controversial administrative decisions.

It comes at about the same time as the receipt of a letter of serious concerns from Jagdish Chand. Mr Chand is a Vice President of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, the owner and operator of the university.

The letter says:

– The university has been in the limelight in the dailies lately. There seems to be disturbance within the university community and as a result the university is getting adverse publicity. We have been quizzed by members of the public on these matters and us being isolated with these developments we are not certain what to say;

– It has come to my attention and I am certain other members are also aware of some payments made to the acting VC as an acting allowance while he was on leave. The current acting incumbent has been in the position only for a few months and I believe such allowances are irregular;

– It has also come to light that an administration member of staff has been appointed to a new position and salary been increased by at least two bands. Here the university is struggling to make ends meet and on the other hand, we note that extravagance is rife.

– Items 2 and 3 have taken place understandably while the acting VC was on leave. During this period, I also believe the Chairman of the council filled in for the VC. Now that the new Vice Chancellor’s position is advertised and shortly to be filled, I am of the opinion that the current incumbent be relieved of his position or limit his tenure. Also, we must consider replacing anyone who would have erred either by way of oversight or intentionally in the matters currently at hand; and

– I will not be able to attend the meeting on the 22nd September 2018 due to work-related matters. However, I would like these concerns tabled and discussed for the betterment of The University of Fiji. I for one have been personally involved from day one when the APS decided to give shape to dream of our very visionary Arya Samjis in 1956 (I stand to be corrected on the year). It is a sad day that we have made mega investment for education and some stakeholders who we look upon to uphold the visions are defaulting.

“I wish the University Council a successful meeting on the 22nd.”
