THE BUZZ ABOUT ABBAS’ FANTASY

There’s a buzz of excitement at the Fantasy Development at Nadi’s Wailoaloa. Started in 1992, they are about to start the last stage, including two iconic buildings, a big Marina Terminal and a Cultural and Learning Centre.

Both buildings are the culmination of the dream of one man, Abbas Ali, who has personally and a lot of the time alone, supervised the creation of this Nadi Bay integrated resort.

DOESN’T PAY TO BE SMART ALECK

A Fiji Times smart aleck decided he can barge into a meeting and not be asked to leave.

Not so smart.

Not so vocal either when told security would be called if he did not leave.

OPEN MARKET

There’s an interesting example of how business economics can be changed by infrastructure.

In Martintar, at the entertainment centre, business ladies and the like had their spots along the main road all organised. They were careful to spread out so service provision was easy.

But FRA put up a big fence with just three openings down the middle of the road so all the business ladies and the like had to move down opposite an access. After some time the jostling and arguing settled, but some of the more established businesses feel put out.

RIP-OFF DRUG

There’s a drug that sells literally billions of doses worldwide.

The chemical name is pantoprazole and it is made and sold under many brand names, mainly out of China and India.

A long-time user went to a Namaka chemist where they had shopped for years.

The drug normally costs a dollar a strip, but the price had gone up overnight to $6.

Only the name had changed.

The buyer then went to two other chemists in Namaka and Votualevu and was quoted $7 and $9 respectively and at a fourth outlet bought for $1.50. The question is, how can the exact said drug cost vary and how can it have an overnight inflation of 900 per cent?
