Judge Hears Case, Amends Charge

A High Court judge ruled that a lesser charge be accorded to an accused after hearing the allegation against him in court on Thursday.

Ledua Naba appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar initially charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm.

He appeared in the High Court in Suva yesterday.

It is alleged that Naba punched and hit the complainant with an extension cord. The State prosecution told the court that the complainant had sustained multiple bruises on the neck, back, shoulder and face.

Justice Goundar asked prosecution as to why the accused was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm as the alleged injuries were not so serious. Prosecution then amended the charge to a lesser charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Naba pleaded guilty to the charge. He was further remanded in custody for the hearing of mitigation on October 16. A production order was also issued for the accused to be present in court.
