Bail Denied

A 33-year-old man charged with attempted murder was refused bail by the High Court in Suva yesterday. Anil Chand is charged with one count each of attempted murder and assault causing actual bodily harm.

He appeared before High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar. Justice Goundar refused the bail on the grounds that the accused had a high chance of not attending his case once released on bail.

It is alleged that on July 25, 2018, Chand who was in a relationship with the complainant went to her flat in Vatuwaqa, Suva, and confronted her as to why she wanted to leave him. Chand had allegedly taken a knife with him and allegedly stabbed the complainant several times on her back and abdomen.

It is alleged the complainant’s sister ran into the room after hearing her scream, where she was also allegedly stabbed by the accused.

“There was an interference between the accused and the complainant while she was admitted in the hospital,” the court heard Justice Goundar say.

“There is a risk of interference if the accused is released on bail.”

The accused was remanded in custody. The matter was adjourned for pre-trial conference on October 19 before Justice Goundar.

A production order was issued for the accused to be present in court for his pre-trial conference.
