Gareth Baber believes a new format similar to 15s will help in identifying players for rugby’s short code.
The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach yesterday revealed the challenges he’s facing 23 months on the job.
“Whenever you are in pre-season or post season, coaches are looking at how the players are progressing. We have more challenges this year.
“I love to see a new 7s format where only the top teams play in. This is to be like the Skipper Cup Premiership competition in 15s.
“Top players in Fiji playing in the league will be fantastic,” Baber said.
“Obviously it will be good for the development of 7s. Players play from club to club, village to village but certainly with the qualities of players we have, it will be great to have them compete regularly.”
His other concern is injury which was also one of major challenges they go through as a team.
“We always make sure that players do not pick up injuries after a competitive tournament in Fiji and if they do, then we make sure they recover,” he said.
The extended squad of 40 players are currently going through their daily training programme in various Fiji Rugby Union gyms in three centres Nadi, Sigatoka and Suva.
“In October we get the players prepared to play in tournaments. So it’s important, they can take everything they have done this month to next month.
“We have Oceania 7s tournament in November and towards end of November the World Sevens Series starts in Dubai and South Africa,” he said.
Baber was impressed with the feedback from the extended squad.
“The players are in good shape, its hard work for them.
“As we get closer to tournament time, they all working hard and in good attendance,” Baber said. Edited by Osea Bola
