A disgruntled father and his family in Lautoka are feeling the full blunt of the Asian Subterranean Termites infestation.

Lovu Seaside resident Kamueli Nale, 59, said his house would be on the verge of collapsing if the invasion by the termites continued.

“Termites have totally affected the house,” Mr Nale said.

“The house has become so weak that even a minor cyclone could cause it to collapse.”

The invasion by termites could be visible throughout the house, including the double walls, window frames, ceiling, washroom and house furniture.

He said that Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) had sprayed the entire house a few weeks ago.

“It’s even inside the bedrooms where we sleep,” Mr Nale said.

“It has become a nuisance for the entire community and some ratepayers in the city, especially in the evening from 6-8pm.

“We light the fire outside and turn off power inside our homes because termites get attracted to fire.

“We are not able to do anything else during these times.”

Mr Nale and his family have been living at their house for more than 30 years and to see such pests overrun the building is indeed devastating for everyone.

“There are a lot of memories inside the house,” he said.

Six people live in the house and they are hopeful that the termites will disappear soon.
