A 25-year-old farmer yesterday was sentenced to five years in jail by the High Court in Suva for aggravated robbery.

Josaia Warodo, who was convicted of the charge, appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar. He imposed a non-parole period of three years.

Warodo, allegedly along with two suspended police officers Keperieli Ketewai and Luke Tarailai, robbed a 38-year-old businessman of Nausori of assorted items to the total value of $1580 in Kadavu on April 2, 2018.

The complainant was in Kadavu to sell second-hand items at the Kadavu market when the incident occurred. Justice Goundar said Warodo with two others were drunk and ruthless.

“The complainant was physically beaten to the point where he feared for his life,” he said.

“The court has the duty to denounce such behaviour on innocent members of the public.”

Warodo was given 30 days to appeal against his sentence to the Court of Appeal.

For Ketewai and Tarailai, the State lawyer told the court that they were relying on the caution interview.

The defence lawyer told the court that they would challenge caution interview statements and file grounds of voir dire for Tarailai.

For Ketewai and Tarailai the matter was adjourned for pre-trial conference to November 2.
