This year marks the 163rd anniversary of the arrival of Chinese people in Fiji.

The People’s Republic of China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Qian Bo, said the Chinese community was now an important member of Fiji’s big family.

“Since the arrival of the first Chinese more than 163 years ago, generations of Chinese immigrants have established themselves through hard work, the constant pursuit for a better life and have integrated well into the mainstream society here,” Mr Qian said.

“They have actively engaged in public welfare, lending a helping hand to the local communities in time of need and have made important contributions to the local economic and social development.”

Mr Qian thanked Chinese community groups and members for the enormous contribution they made over the years in promoting the development of China-Fiji co-operation.

“The Chinese community lives in peace and harmony with other ethnic groups, contributing a great deal to the ethnic and cultural diversity of the country,” he said.

“The Chinese community is a firm supporter of China-Fiji friendship, playing an active role in promoting exchanges and co-operation between our two countries and people.

“I believe with the active participation of the Chinese community and joint efforts by the people from different walks of life in both countries, we will be able to yield more fruitful results from our exchange and co-operation and achieve greater progress for our bilateral relations.”
