Vodafone Fijian Under-20 rep, Vereniki Tiko has been included in the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s training squad.

Head coach Gareth Baber confirmed yesterday that Tiko has been drafted on a trial basis.

And he may include more from the Koli Sewabu-coached team which won the World Rugby Under-20 Trophy earlier this month in Romania,

Baber had been following Tiko from last year when he was a member of the Tabadamu 7s team.

He added Tiko is one of players he is looking to give the squad the edge on the field.

“Last year we did some training games against other teams and one of those teams was Tabadamu,” Baber said.

“Tiko played particularly well in those games which caught my eye and it was always my intention to follow that up.

“He is blessed with pace and play well against us.

“He has been in with boys at the gym and hopefully in October into November he will get the opportunity to show what he learns from training into competitions.”

World Sevens Series, 2020 Olympics

Baber is aware there is still a lot work to do but he is focused on winning the World Sevens Series.

“We had a busy year last season. We had some great wins and a few disappointing losses. I will make sure we don’t make those mistakes again. We will need to win the sevens’ series.”

Baber added heading into their fifth week of training, they will be focused on the transitioning and conditioning process.

“The early part of the season is around building the athletics strength so they can get out and take more volume of work as we go into the next two months,” he said.

“At the end of this week we will start transitioning into some of our conditioning work. In October we will play couple of our tournaments here in Fiji as well.

“It is a busy time at the moment, closely ensuring that the players are injury free and closely doing the work that they need through tournaments.

“I want to get more talent in and keep the pressure on people as much as possible in the next two years.”
