Court Finds Grandfather Guilty Of Raping Granddaughter, 11

A grandfather yesterday was found guilty of one count of indecently annoying any person, four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by the High Court in Suva.

The accused appeared before High Court judge Justice Riyaz Hamza for judgment.

He is charged with six counts of rape, one count of indecent­ly annoying any person and one count of sexual assault. He had pleaded guilty to one of the six counts of rape.

The accused was also not found guilty to one of the rape counts. The trial proper lasted nine days before Justice Hamza and in t h e presence of t h r e e assessors. The incidents occurred between January 1, 2012, and Au­gust 31, 2015 in Tailevu.

The victim is the accused’s pa­ternal granddaughter and was 11 years old at the time of the in­cidents.

The State was represented by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions law­yer Susan Serukai.

The accused was represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer Lisi­ate Qetaki.

The accused has been remanded in custody and the matter adjourned for sentencing hearing on October 2, before Justice Hamza.
