Sanaka Samarasinha, the new United Nations (UN) resident co-ordinator and UNDP resident representative for Fiji presented his credentials to the President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Ko­nusi Konrote yesterday.

Previously, Mr Samarasinha served in Minsk, Belarus, for five and a half years. Minsk is a country in Europe next to Po­land, Ukraine and Lithuania.

Mr Samarasinha also worked in various offices of the United Nations and UNDP where he was the director Global Centre for Public Service Excellence, Singapore; Senior Advisor to the UN resident co-ordi­nator.

He was also the UNDP resident represent­ative in Iran; officer in charge, Maldives; director Kosovo and officer in charge of UNDP Samoa, Niue, Tokelau and the Cook Islands.

Mr Samarasinha was also Deputy Resi­dent Representative in Myanmar and Dep­uty Country Director, Sri Lanka.

Prior to that he served in Bangkok as the Regional Rule of Law Advisor covering 26 countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Before joining the UN Mr Samarasinha worked in the legal profession and in jour­nalism, with government, civil society and private sector entities in several countries including the USA, South Africa and India.

He is from Sri Lanka and is married with two daughters.
