Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is reminding members of the public not to dump household waste on road reserves.

FRA general manager – Central Aram Goes says they have noticed an increase in the number of drains on road reserves being frequently covered in household rubbish, which not only causes pollution but it also creates extra work for the contractors.

“The FRA contractors periodically cleans, mows and removes the overgrown weeds and trees to keep the road reserves clear of vegetation, debris and other obstructions,” Mr Goes said.

“People planting crops along the road do so at their own risk, as do people leaving personal property outside their private boundary.”

He said FRA was working with the town councils to ensure developers and resident’s whose activities encroached beyond their private boundaries were complying with the relevant regulations to protect the road assets and see that the public’s safety is not compromised.

“We all have a part to play in keeping our environment clean and safe and we can all stop pollution if we all take responsibility of our own household rubbish and green waste.”
