The recent upgrading of the Nasarava Road in Labasa by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has significantly improved access for farmers.

This is especially during the rainy weather, according to a resident and sugarcane farmer, Rajendra Kumar.

The work will be delivered through Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) as part of the periodic road maintenance programme to provide access to people in the Central, Northern and Eastern Divisions.

The road, which is located eight kilometres out of Labasa Town, caters for sugarcane farmers, root crop farmers and some 2000 residents.

Mr Kumar said because the road was located in a low-lying area, it is often flooded and very dusty at times.

“I am very happy to see that this road is finally getting attention after all these years,” Mr Kumar said.

“Blocked drainage has caused flooding for us every time it rains. Now the road is also wider, compared to the old state.”

A crew of six men are clearing water channels and high shoulders, which will address the issue of flooding.

A total of 3.20 kilometres of drainage is currently being cleared.
